CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

ARIA

My body was sucked violently through a portal. I was no longer in our haven of paradise. I had fallen deep into an abyss of nothingness. I wanted to scream. I wanted to cry out at the top of my lungs, but nothing came out. A random flicker of memories flashed before my eyes as everything went in reverse: making love to Noah, walking backwards to the elevators, sitting by that fountain, watching the dollar flip out of the water, finding the note, dancing with Ryan, dancing with Evan, kissing Evan, arriving at Prom, Noah unclasping my necklace, writing in my diary, and…

I couldn’t rewind any further. That’s when I realized I’d lost a huge chunk of time. Having written some key events in my diary, I couldn’t remember them taking place, as if it were a dream.

“Aria, can you hear me, angel?”

Noah’s voice echoed in my mind, but I still couldn’t see him.

I was falling in the darkness; the way Alice had fallen through the rabbit hole.

“Aria?”

Metal scraped against metal, tires screeched to a halt, and then the startling sound of shattering glass splintered into shards, scattering over the pavement. My body suddenly stiffened with a jolt, and I found myself strapped into my passenger seat… upside down. Car horns were blaring as the never-ending siren of an ambulance got louder. I wanted to cover my ears, but I couldn’t move.

“Hold on!” a man shouted. “We’re gonna get you out, hon! Stay conscious!”

I couldn’t recognize that voice.

How… did I get here? Where’s Noah?

My recollections abandoned me as soon as I felt blood oozing down my right temple. I wanted to turn my head toward Noah’s seat, but the pain was agonizing; my seat belt was almost choking me. Covered in broken glass, the potent smell of gasoline irritated my lungs as I coughed uncontrollably.

Noah…

Twisting my neck in his direction, I groaned in pain and passed out.

Sirens, screaming, car horns… all of it stopped, except for that annoying beeping noise.

Beep… beep…

“Aria, listen to my voice, sweetheart. Squeeze my hand if you can hear me.”

My eyelids felt so heavy.

“Please, baby… try.”

I don’t understand what’s happened.

The reality I knew had evaporated. I wanted to run back to that hotel room and hide myself in Noah’s arms, but there was nowhere to go. All I could see was black.

“Aria, I love you so much…”

Is he crying? Oh, my god…

I had never heard such devastating cries of agony in my life. I had to open my eyes. I had to comfort him.

Come on! Just wake up! I scolded myself, commanding my body to move.

“I can’t live without you,” he painfully expressed.

Something wet dripped onto my forearm before I realized it was Noah’s tears. He was holding my hand and talking to me.

How come I can’t move?

I couldn’t lift a finger, which paralyzed me in fear.

“I can’t pull the plug, Aria. Do you hear me? I can’t do it! So you better fight! You better fight for your life, because you’re fighting for mine as well!” He squeezed my hand harder and murmured in my ear, “I can’t exist without you.
